Harun al-Rashid
(mar. 763 o feb. 766, Rayy, Irán–24 mar. 809, FONT face=TahomaṬūs, Irán).

Quinto califa de la dinastía abasí. Sin ser un gran gobernante ni un personaje atractivo, gobernó (786–809) en una época en que la sociedad islámica alcanzó su apogeo en términos de riqueza, conocimiento y poder. Es mejor conocido, no obstante, como un personaje central de Las mil y una noches, en donde es presentado como el epítome del gobernante sabio y justo. En sus primeros años fue muy influenciado por su madre y su tutor YaFONT face=Tahomaḥyā de la familia barmakí de visires. Sucedió a su hermano después de la muerte prematura de este y gobernó sobre un reino que era desgarrado en forma creciente por la lucha interna de líderes regionales que buscaban la autonomía. A su muerte, sus hijos al-Maʾmun y al-Amīn se enfrentaron en abierta guerra civil.
